Welcome to Poobiekins.com
Come share your experiences, fears, hopes and joys and even stresses of being a single parent.
This website is dedicated to that all to often treaded upon hero, the single parent. Whether you are a single father or a single mother but especially a single parent of color, you face obstacles that defy the experiences of parents who have the luxury (for lack of a better term) of being married or having a significant other to help them bare the heavy load of parenthood.
July 17, 2002 I became the mother of an absolutely gorgeous 10 lbs 9 oz 21 1/2 inch baby girl, who I named Bellanca-Aasha. Bellanca means beautiful and Aasha means life, I named her this because I want her to have a beautiful life.
She is the best thing, bar none, to happen to me. I love her and as any decent parent would, I want the absolute best for her. After having her I realized that there were very few resources, online and otherwise for single parents and especially single parents of color or those who are single parents of children of color. Hence the creation of this site. The name Poobiekins is originated from my daughter's nickname "Poobie". I thought the name was cute and I want the site to stand as a tribute to how her arrival into this world has inspired and grounded me as a person.
This is the first website that will give you insight into doing the best for your child as a single parent without the "Baby Mama" or "Baby Daddy" drama or at least suggestions on how to cope with "The Drama". Also while pregnant I noticed that there were not any sites specifically dedicated to the special issues that women of color face during and after pregnancy.
This site will serve as a viable resource for mothers and fathers of color as well as men and women who themselves might not be of color but who are responsible for raising, nurturing and rearing healthy children of color.
Poobiekins seeks to uplift, inspire, encourage, educate, inform and enlighten single parents of color or single parents raising, nurturing and rearing children of color.
Glimpses of Single Parenthood
Whether you are divorced, widowed, separated, or decidedly single; man or woman, if you are a parent of color then this website's goal is to serve as a resource of information for you and your child.
Going Places
This site is meant to inspire as well as inform and even hopefully educate. I will gladly accept any suggestions and information that you may have regarding parenting and any other issue that is discussed on this site.
The Beginning of Life
Enjoy your child! Live in the moment don't allow yourself to fall into the common parenting trap of wishing your child's childhood away (i.e., "I'll be glad when my child can walk, talk, go to school, etc.) Before you know it these will be over and done and you'll no longer be dealing with a baby, a child but a young man or a young lady and in case you didn't know the older your child, the more complex your parenting issues.Just a little something to make you think and hopefully laugh!
